The Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation is a registered Non-Profit Organisation with a vision of seeing South Africa where diabetes ceases to be a killer due to lack of awareness, by supporting and helping people take control of diabetes.
Diabetes is a close subject to Bongi Ngema Zuma due to personal experiences hence the idea to start a foundation was conceived.

Some of the experiences and concerns noted by Madam Bongi Ngema Zuma are:

• Loss of Madam Bongi Ngema-Zuma’s mother after living with diabetes for 28 years,
• +1,5 million South African citizens are living with Diabetes,
• Potential 4 million South African citizens are at risk of developing diabetes

As a result of these concerns and personal experiences, The Bongi Ngema Zuma Foundation was born. The foundation adopted health as a key focus area – specifically diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic condition that has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, with an estimated 285 million people living with diabetes in 2010. This number is expected to increase to 438 million by the year 2030 (IDF 2009). In South Africa, diabetes reached an estimated prevalence of 5.5% in 2000 and accounted for 4.5% of all deaths in the country (Bradshaw et al 2007). Diabetes is also associated with debilitating complications, all at a huge disease burden and cost to society. The annual costs of treating and preventing diabetes and its complications globally are estimated to be at least USD 360 billion in 2010 and USD 490 billion in 2030.

The Bongi Ngema Zuma Foundation has taken a holistic approach in order to address the challenges faced by diabetic patients as well as those that are at risk of developing such disease.

Such approach includes but not limited to the following:

1. Education and Awareness Campaigns which seeks to:

• Promote public awareness of diabetes, its symptoms and risks,
• Educate the citizens about management of diabetes,
• Promotion of healthy lifestyles
• The importance of aerobic exercising
• Educate diabetics about diet and nutrition.

This approach has the benefit of allowing early screening, diagnosis and treatment to those that need it. For these to be successful, there is need for well-trained Health Care Practitioners to provide the whole package of care, from awareness and education to treatment.

2. Counseling and Testing which seeks to:

• Provide counseling for citizens that are volunteering for screening of Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Body Mass Index and Diabetes Mellitus.
• Provide counseling to caregivers of diabetics,
• Screening of citizens for Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Body Mass Index and Diabetes Mellitus.

3. Rural Development Programme which seeks to:

• Educate communities about food security
• Educate communities about the importance of home gardens for food security,
• Facilitate training opportunities for communities with regard to food gardens and food security,
• Facilitate opportunities for strengthening institutional capacity of NGO’s, Faith Based Organisations, Community Based Organisations and other organs of civil society,
• Provide a platform for improvement of communal sanitation and ablution systems

Our integrated approach in addressing diabetes challenges is underpinned by the following values which we all embrace:
