The African Leadership Magazine International Advisory Board under the Chairmanship of Dr. Joe Beasley selected the Madam Bongi Ngema-Zuma as the African Female Leader of the Year 2016 for the work she does through her Diabetes Foundation. Madame Ngema-Zuma was presented with the award during a prestigious event held at Sandton, Johannesburg.
The event, which is aimed at preserving African Leadership Magazine’s tradition of celebrating exemplary leadership as well as individuals who contributed to shaping the global perception of the African continent, in attendance was His Excellency, John Mahama, immediate Past President of Ghana; Her Excellency, Madam Dr. Bongi Ngema-Zuma, First Lady of the Republic of South Africa; Honorable Abubakar Malami, SAN, Nigeria’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General; Mr. Mohammed Dewji, President, MeTL Croup Tanzania; Dr. Chris Kirubi, Director, Centum Investment, Kenya, amongst other business, political and diplomatic leaders.
In her acceptance speech, Madame Ngema-Zuma said” I believe that Africa can win the progress race by focusing on its people, their human rights and empowerment. Africa must realize the power in the people, the buying power, innovativeness, resilience and harness this power by developing technical skills among youth and women, boost the potential of women to lead in politics, corporate, as well as other spheres of society”.
Past recipients of this prestigious award include; Dr. Mo Ibrahim, founder, Ibrahim Prize for Leadership, 2010; Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, 2011; H.E. Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria 2012; Xavier Luc-Duval, Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius & then Minister of Finance (2013); H.E. President Jakaya Kikwete, former President of Tanzania, 2014; His Excellency former President Goodluck Jonathan, the immediate past president of Nigeria, 2015.
The African Leadership magazine Person of the Year is an annual award reserved for one distinguished African, who is considered to have blazed the trail in the year under review.
