The number of people that attended the event ranged between 12000 and 15000. Over 1600 volunteers were screened for diabetes, blood pressure, weight and waist circumference problems.
Madam Bongi Ngema-Zuma from the Bongi Ngema-Zuma (BNZ) Foundation for Diabetes attended the meeting in support of the Church activities.
Novo Nordisk (Pty) Limited, a leading diabetes care company in South Africa had a mobile clinic (The Changing Diabetes Bus)The bus had the facilities on board to screen for diabetes, blood pressure, waist circumference and weight. They also provided diabetes education to the people who were in attendance.
Diabetes is a chronic disease which is escalating in South Africa. Novo Nordisk felt, that in order to minimize the impact of a growing epidemic, as many people as possible need to be tested. Furthermore by being tested and being treated, the burden of complications is reduced thus saving money, in the long run for those treating patients with diabetes and reducing the strain on the healthcare system.
In collaboration with the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation, Novo Nordisk are endeavoring to create awareness of diabetes and reduce the ever increasing numbers of people living with diabetes.
The programme included screening of volunteers, at the meeting, as well as an address by Madam Ngema-Zuma followed by Dr Diliza.
